My dad’s name is Roy Durban Jones. I visited South Africa in 2015. At the airport, a man asked me “Are you African-American?”. I said, “No, I’m British-Bajan, but my dad’s middle name is Durban so I reckon I must have South African blood somewhere down the line”. The man told me that I should visit Durban whilst in the country. I asked him what Durban meant. He told me that the Portuguese discovered the land that is now called Durban on Christmas day (1497) and so it was named ‘Natal’ – Portuguese for ‘Christmas’. My dad hates Christmas, but Christmas is literally his middle name. ‘Ubaba’ and ‘uyise’ are Zulu words for ‘dad’ and ‘father’, respectively. Ubaba Natal is an ode to my dad (and Christmas).
